"This True Story Was First Told Around a
Campfire"

TRUE CAMPFIRE STORY #1
THE
OLD CRICKET
The other evening I heard this crunching noise, sorta like scraping
toast, just
outside my back door. I went outside with a flashlight to investigate.
Finally,
I found the source of this awful sound. There was this huge old cricket
between
the back door and the doormat.
The cricket was just scraping and scraping!
I asked, "Why are you making such a funny sound when crickets usually
play
a variety of beautiful melodies with rich lovely sounds." The
cricket said, "My chirper is broken."
"Can it be fixed?" I inquired. He said, "No, we don't have
chirper doctors."
I wondered why they do all this chirping in the first place and asked,
"Why do you crickets chirp?"
"Well, we're trying to have the girls find us.” he replied.
"Oh, I wonder which songs they like the most?", I asked, and he
quizzically responded, "Gee, I'm not sure; I never did have a girl find
me."
"Yes, but you must know which songs were played by the crickets that
got
the girls.", I suggested. Again, despondently he stated, "Gosh, I'm
sure I've never seen any of the other guys get a girl."
Quite sure that I had him in a corner, I smugly announced, "Ok, ok,
then
how do you know that your chirping attracts the girls?"
I think he smiled and said, " Well, we sure got lots of crickets!"
